Gemonese, geographical heart of Friuli, is a very peculiar area. It is characterized by being an alluvial plain surrounded by hills and mounts. “Mandamento” since the unification of Italy, in 1976 it was hit by a disastrous earthquake. For centuries people of this area developed their activities by following the water: mills, forges, furnaces, peat and clay quarries were built alongside irrigation ditches and derivations to bring water to the crops and produce electricity.
The Ecomuseo delle Acque has been operating in this area since 2000. It is a territorial museum project that aims to document and enhance the rich local cultural heritage, made up of places, buildings, activities, and promoting participatory projects with the aim of preserving and passing on memories, knowledge and traditions.
