The Lesach Valley in the west of the region is known as the most natural valley, because the high alpine character and the quiet villages on the steep mountain slopes have always left their mark on this valley only for people with a strong sense of home where the main activities are related to organic farming and the management of the woods.
Further east stretches the Gailtal, a wide open mountain valley where farming and hospitality are the prevalent activities. At the crossroads of the roads between north and south, west and east, lies Kötschach-Mauthen, often referred to as the “most delicious corner of Carinthia”. Innovative farmers, creative food artisans, pleasure-oriented innkeepers and comfortable hotels characterize this area making it attractive all year round.
In a north-westerly direction, the path leads via the Gitschtal valley to Lake Weissensee, a relic from the Ice Age. This has been one of Austria’s most popular holiday regions for decades. The natural lakeshore areas, the traffic-calmed zones at Lake Weissensee, excellent hotels and restaurants as well as the sporting facilities for water sports enthusiasts, hikers, cyclists and winter sports enthusiasts are attractions for many holidaymakers from near and far.
